You may have noticed that BlackBeltForums was down a few times over the last few days. The only option my current host seems to be offering is to upgrade again...rather than look at what the problem is.

I am therefore in the process of moving to another hosting company. Hopefully everything goes well though you may experience a little downtime when the forum is down (though hopefully not). To stop members posting updates to the wrong database, I will probably redirect users from the current set up to the new one. This ensures that few posts are not lost.

I apologise for any inconvenience. In the long term, it is important for us to be on a reliable host that is always online :)

Thanks guys. Picked a good host that specialises in forums. Speaking to them now about transferring the site. Will report back soon :)

Its past 3am here so just heading to bed, but thought I'd let you all know that the forums are now on a different host. The site was only switched off for 30 minutes. Let me know if you notice a difference in performance. :)

Some more information about the move etc (though I'd bore you all).

Before I hosted all the websites I own on one server. Moving forward, I want to ensure that my important websites are reliably hosted. Not only reliably hosted, but reliably supported. I therefore moved BlackBeltForums, TaekwondoForums and MMAForums to a UK company called Nimbus Hosting. I know of a UK football forum they host that has around 17 million posts and they also host the huge UK tech forum AV Forums. That has over 18 million posts and normally has 5,000-10,000 people online at the same time. So they have a huge amount of experience of hosting large forums...so I know the forum is in good hands.

Now, one thing I need you guys to check is the speed of the forums. Previously, the forums were hosted in the USA, not the UK. However, I have been informed that people based in North America should not experience slower speeds. In fact, they might see faster speeds due to their hosting set up.

Being in Colombia on a connection that struggles to get more than 1MB, I honestly don't see a big difference. However, those of you with good connections should see some sort of difference. So I'd appreciate if you can tell me if you see any difference in speed, good or bad. There are things we can set up to improve the speed of the forums so rest assured, if speed is an issue, I will look into resolving the issue

    :)

Seems a fair bit faster, Kev - at least here in Pennsylvania.

Of course, since I do Taiji I wouldn't really know what FAST is, but it definitely seems to have speeded up a little.

haha Cool. It should be better moving forward. Before I had more than 15 other websites on the same hosting plan. Now I only have my forums on this plan. So there should be no surprises. That is, if I have any problems with my other websites, the forums will not be affected.

Kevin, I have been having problems signing in to TKD forums today but was able to get on here! Maybe this is the problem you speak of!

You may have noticed the forums going down again. This was due to a number of reasons. First and foremost, it was because the hosting company set me up with the wrong hosting package. I had paid for a plan with 2GB of RAM and they gave me one on 512MB of RAM. So the forums went down because of this as the hosting couldn't cope.

We also experienced some attacks by spammers. Spam is a big problem...a really big problem. You can set up scripts that stop spammers posting spam...but all of this puts stress on resources etc. We found one ip was attacking the site with connections all the time.

I am planning on changing the type of control panel that is used to administrate the forums so that might require the forums to be offline for 10 minutes or so...but that will probably happen late at night in North America and early in Europe.

Anyways, I'll bore you with these details more later. Rest assured, the forum is in good hands, and I am doing my best the forum is faster and more secure :)
