Hello my fellow martial arts friends. Firstly I would like to appologise for not replying to your private messages, or not being on the forum in a while........ But I have very good reasons. I am very trusting to a fault, I belive eveything that people tell me and I have been told I am very gulliable, and always tell the complete truth. I guess you can say being a dumb blonde is my downfall:confused:!!
Since being on the BBF I have become close friends with many of you guys, but as you noticed I have stopped following you, i know this may or may not concern you but I am in fear for my life............Friends from BBF asked at different occasions if I would accept to friend requests on FB, now i must explain I am a technophobe and only been on FB and online in about four months. Anyhoo, I told them my real second name and accepted their requests. When they commented on pics in my profile on FB and asked questions about me, where I stay, even when asked my address. Recently One of my friends from where I stay PM me about some of the questions and comments made by these people. As he knows how gulliable and vunerable he picked up on the fact they were a bit too personal. Still I thought nothing of it and continued answering questions. It wasn't until One asked me my waist size to which I replied an eight. Another then asked me my bra size, alarm bells started ringing. The next thing I knew they inundated me with filthy pornographic messages and tagged me in some very nasty pics, my wall is covered in them. One guy told me he googled my house and even told me where I stay and which park is across the road from me. He told me if I did not talk to him he would come after me, he said if I did not keep replying to him he was gonna kill me after " ruining me" and raping me. Another who also googled where i stay told me amoung other things was watchin my every move and was coming to eat my liver, lips and kidneys. Another told me he was gonna anally rape me then kill me, another threatened to firebomb my house and all my families houses. I fell that I am living in some sort of waking nightmare, and I am scared of my own shadow, this has effected me awfully. They now are unfriended from FB. I hear you ask why I have not reported all of this but all of them have warned me that if I do they will kill me. I believe them.
I have struggled with myself as whether or not to post this, but I had to warn others that everyone is not who they say they are. Please be very careful!! I miss you guys and misss this Forum so much, but I can't bear this.I am heading for a breakdown. I will be back as big Arnie says!! All my love, peace and respects your Kunoichi, lady warrior. Oh I'm gonna leave you perverted sick Bas***** on and not ignore you until you read this....As I have said this only concerns a few of you and not to my many great and true friends. I love you guys, see and chat with you ASAP. xxxxXXxxxxXXxxxx

OK, bottom line is you need to report this to the authorities. You have a documented "paper trail" of these messages to present to them. By not pressing charges and pursuing this you are empowering them, and it enables them to do it to someone else.

Deb, I agree with RJ and Caneman report it NOW. If you want some help and some real professional advice contact some of the LEOs on this forum or you can contact Enkidu who is a practicing attorney, if he can not help you because of geographical reasons he will know who can.

If you are in the NY area I know a Detective Sargent in the NYPD who you can go to, he is one of my black belts, I am in Las Vegas NM, my instructor (Master) is in Hesperia California. I have helped women is my classes over the years with similar issues so if you need to vent I am at [email protected]

Best way is to get pissed and angry and fight back!!!

As RJ, Caneman and Michael have said, you need to report this now. This is not something you should take lightly. Make sure you have not deleted the messages as these will be used as evidence against those that did it.

With regards to Facebook etc, you should not accept friend requests from people you have never met. I have broke this rule 3 times myself for guys that I have done business with in the USA for years. Whilst I haven't met them in real life, we have spoke on the phone and worked together on projects etc, so there wasn't much of a risk.

Your Facebook account gives away a lot of your personal information such as email and phone number etc, so accepting friend requests is not something you should take lightly. I wouldn't recommend anyone here to start friending each other there unless they know the person very well.

Can you confirm whether or not you befriended these people via Black Belt Forums? At the moment, every member, regardless of whether they have 1 post or 1,000 posts, are able to send messages. This is a privilege we should perhaps remove so that this kind of thing is less likely to happen (i.e. only grant pm access to members with over a set number of posts).

Really sorry to stumble across your problems, and, as with all the others, urge you to report and pursue this to the fullest extent. Without meaning to impugn the integrity of any of the above, my only suggestion would be to go to the authorities (Police in the first instance) & do it in person so you can physically validate the ID & bona fides of the person/body you are dealing with. You should not be looking for the solution in the same place that you found the problem.
  9. Enkidu

Enkidu Destroyer of your martial arts fantasies

    Okay Deb,

I have a moment to log back on and respond. If you would prefer to not discuss this on an open forum where anyone can read this, let me know. Remember, that people who are guests of these forums can and do read the messages here and can find this place via Facebook where posts made here are also made a part of the BBF Forums page. If you would prefer to take this to personal messaging, let me know, or if you would prefer to do this via private e-mail, let me know that as well. If you PM me, I can give you my e-mail address.

Now, with that out of the way, let me respond first by saying, don't beat yourself up over being trusting or making a mistake providing too much information about yourself over the Internet. I am sure we've all made that mistake at one time or another. I know that I have on one or more occasion. Years ago, I used to participate on a forum that discussed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Things got VERY heated on that forum and the message boards were often visited by racist crackpots who would make other veiled or overt threats against other members. Being young and dumb, I challenged any of these Nazis to "man up" say the things to me in person that they wrote on the Internet where I would then promise them that they would be picking their teeth out of their shit later. People would claim to want to meet me and ask for personal information, and I was all too happy to oblige. These yahoos, of course, would never show, but they did try to fuck with me by calling my place of work and sending anonymous threatening e-mails and such.

Obviously I knew I was providing personal information to crack-pots, but my ego got the better of me and I did it anyway. That was waaaaaaaaaaay dumber than anything you think you've done. So put aside beating yourself up and chock it up to a lesson learned. We all make mistakes, the only question is whether we learn from them or not.

Let me also put your mind a little bit at ease by saying this: 99.999% of the cranks you meet on the Internet and who do these things are just trying to get their jollies by acting like asses on the Internet. They aren't in any way serious, they are just acting like little children on the Internet and they are able to act that way without immediate repercussions due to the anonymous veil that the Internet provides. So, despite how scary it can be to receive e-mails and messages like this there is almost not chance that any of them will do anything but write horrendously ugly e-mails.

I am not saying that there is no danger, but the danger is much lower than you might feel right now. That said, there is still a small chance that one or more of these fools might do more than just send obnoxious threatening e-mails. As far as describing to you the park near where you live, that is most likely just an act of Internet terrorism. With things like google earth and things of that nature, with an address, I can get photos of where someone lives easily and the surrounding area. This makes it easier for creeps to create fear.

Okay, now about legally what you can and should do about it. First, save everything. Make hard copies of the threats, take screen shots, identify the e-mail addresses, facebook pages, and anything else about the offenders that you can. Immediately contact facebook with the threats that have been made against you. The better a paper trail you have, the more likely they can be traced.

The next thing to do is to report this, along with whatever back-up you have, to your local authorities. I cannot speak with certainty to the laws in your area, but I am certain that it is a crime there, just as it is in the United States, to do such things. The authorities in your area may or may not take it seriously, depending on their workload or their proclivity for making such Internet crimes a high priority. Remember to be your own advocate. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Once someone is assigned to your case, you need to regularly follow up with them to make sure the wheels of justice are moving. They may end up doing a trace on the computer data and determine that the people making such threats are out of their jurisdiction. They may live in different countries. Such is the case of the Internet age. That said, a top priority for you (and for the authorities) should be identifying the people making such threats and where they live.

If it turns out that such people live overseas, this is both good and bad. Good in the sense that there really is no real danger, but bad in the sense that the chances for legal action against them are pretty miniscule. That said, you or the authorities might well be able to directly contact that authorities in whatever jurisdiction the creeps happen to live and make sure to give them all the information about what they have done. While this will most likely not result in an arrest or anything, you might end up putting the fear of God into them if the local authorities give them a call about their actions on the Internet.

To be perfectly frank, the odds that someone in a foreign jurisdiction will be prosecuted or otherwise made to pay are pretty slim. On the other hand, you can sleep a little easier at night if the people are identified and known to live elsewhere. That said, it is possible that under the right circumstances, a restraining order of some sort might be warranted.

BTW, even if you have deleted information about the people making such threats, if they are people you met via BBF's Facebook page, then it is likely those people have posted on the FB page or have "liked" the FB page. I am sure Kevin could assist you in opening up the "rolls" so to speak, including e-mail addresses of people who have registered here but who may not have posted, to find out additional information and identification.

Just to be on the safe side, I would suggest being extra vigilant. I would make sure that people I know are aware of where I am going and what time I am supposed to be there. Tell neighbors and friends about the threat and let them help keep an eye out for unusual activity or suspicious individuals. To the extent possible, don't be out alone at night in unpopulated areas. Make sure to keep your doors locked and bolted. Lock your car doors. Let the guys and gals at your dojo know what is going on. I know it sucks to have to live like this, but chances are you won't even need the extra precautions. But better safe than sorry. I wouldn't really try to alter my life too much over this unless there is some further indication of a genuine threat (like one of the individuals is traced to somewhere in your area), just be of increased vigilance for the time being.

I know this might not be the most satisfying of answers. The chances are that the individuals who did such reprehensible acts will never be made to pay for it in any direct way.

I have an additional suggestion for the time being. Perhaps Kevin might see fit that people who wish to visit this forum must first register before they are able to view the messages here. I would also suggest that this particular message not be posted to the FB page if there is a way to avoid it.

Out of curiosity, Deb, did you start getting these obnoxious requests after you and I were joking about on the gay/bisexual judo thread? I am wondering if some FB people read our joking exchange and decided to target you for that reason.

Like everyone else said, report it immediately, keep copies of everything and don't let it get under your skin! Most of those that post things like that usually do it to get you upset or worried that somethings going to happen to you! Yes, there is a slight chance that one of these idiots could do something but, that's why you need to report it to the local authorities so they would be aware and could do something. You could possibly use a different user name for awhile, then after awhile you could return. Master Fahy

First inform the police. If you dont feel safe at home stay with some friends until you cigure out whats going on.

As enkidu suggested keep everything, if they sent you email keep the entire electronic message: the headers of the email contain the routes that the email took usually right back to the original public ip address.

Next thing to do is go through your security options on facebook, anywhere that shows anyone or everyone set it to friends only, and not friends of friends.

Next change you passwords (email, facebook, twitter) make it something long(at least 12 or more alpha-numeric chacters), pin numbers on bank and credit cards, ect... anything that you access via a computer or some type of passcode, also reset any secert answer questions for your accounts. Depending on how much info they got from you it could also be identity theft... If in dout have credit and bank cards reissued. Unfortunetly it doesnt take much for identity theft to happen.

Deb, I hope you take heart in the fact that so many of us have responded to your post with support and advice. It is a testament to you as a person. We were all techno-noobs once and have made similar mistakes - you are not the first and certainly will not be the last so don't beat yourself up about it.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record (you remember them? Kinda like a CD but bigger :)) Report it, NOW, Enkidu gave you some real good advice, follow it. I would talk to Kevin to and pass on the names of these people so he can boot them from this site as well.
