That is way too low a %, check your SHU rating to make sure it's better than two million. That or possibly your shelf life expired on it (for it to be 25% I'd almost think you're using an inert training model ;))

it's what i am allowed to use at work and i work with delinquent minors so they are pretty strict about the shu we can use, even at that i have never been incapacitated from pepper spray ( not that it is pleasant) and i have accidentally discharged bear repellant in my tent before.

there was no bear the person i was camping with did not tell me we had super pepper spray, i tossed the wrong bag, a steel fuel bottle smashed it and it went off like a top, there was not a part of me that did not get sprayed. i was buck nude and wet from a bathe. the funniest part of all of this was that we were not in bear country, we were in the mexican desert, he brought it for tapers (little wild pig) they get into a cold camp and muck about if you leave stuff out.

Southern Alberta at times make Chicago look like nothing for wind, nice and calm one minute maybe (20km/h wind), than a few minutes later (100km/h winds), depending on where you live it can be less or worse.

The ammonia in oven cleans can cause permanent blindness and respiratory arrest... FYI.... but i think that is pretty clever still :D

My past life was an Aerospace Engineer and chemical reaction and the results on a living organism is something I am very familiar with. My point is and always has been defense against someone who is or is going to use lethal force in an attack. I really could not care less about what happens to them, when someone attacks another individual they loose all consideration as a human being and become simply vermin. Here in NM every attack committed against you is assumed to have lethal intent, no verification is necessary, no retreat is necessary or required. As I have said I am the result of my life experiences, I am a Martial Artist who has had to use his arts in their deadliest form, for me an attacker looses all consideration of what will happen to them.

I get along with everyone, I treat others as I wish them to treat me, except those that would do harm to me, my loved ones, or ones I care about, for those I return their lack of consideration.

As much as I understand and agree with your sentiment, I wonder what your loved ones will think when you're placed in jail for involuntary manslaughter ... unfortunately we live in a society, and that society places a premium on "getting along". Anything that falls outside of a narrowly-defined defense of self is punished, no matter the provocation.

... except in Texas, but that's another country anyway. :D

As I said previously, in NM ANY and all attackers are assumed to be using deadly force, no verification is necessary and no retreat is required. Also ANY citizen witnessing a felony is authorized to apprehend the perpetrator or perpetrators, IF the person resists or attempts to flee, deadly force is authorized by the same citizen. NM also has active stock laws on the books, meaning theft of stock (property) is still considered rustling and using deadly force to protect your property is not an issue, this is cut and dried. One attempts to steal, kill, or harm stock (animals/property) and gets caught by the owner in the act they are usually dead, in NM this is justifiable homicide. The definition of "stock" includes chickens etc and ones dogs are also included.

My auto is the same as my house and as such weapons in a vehicle are not an issue nor are they restricted IN ANY WAY. I always carry an accessible loaded weapon in my vehicles. I usually carry a weapon, before I got my CCW, if I chose to carry it concealed I simply put the magazine in a pocket, not in the weapon and NO CCW is required for a weapon that is unloaded even though it is concealed. One sees open carry of weapons daily here in NM, small town living, I know and shoot with almost all of the City Police, the sheriff and ALL the sheriff deputy's, many of the State Police, and all the game and fish officers. I have also backed up officers on felony stops, they know me and they know my vehicles. Having miles and miles of nothing around you, having a friendly backup is comforting. There are more people in the Los Angeles area and most large urban areas in the US than there are in the entire state of New Mexico.

That's amazing, and something I didn't know - thank you. I didn't think there was a single spot left in the Union that had laws like that.

Makes me want to move there. ;)

    I totally agree.

Better than spray, get the one that is like a goo that sticks...spray gets blown all over the place and may get the sprayer.

Wasp spray works great in an emergency.

I work in corrections in Australia and we have Cs spray I'm various ways to deploy and it is our best weapon against hostile inmates the effects usually go 30 minutes with no lasting effects and it takes effect usually before 30 sec. It works on more than 98% of people. For some reason unknown as yet it people of islander decent it has a low % of working. And I can tell you it will bring you to your knees we get gassed ourselves a fair bit so we know the effects and so not to panic when deployed and haven't got a mask.

Pepper spray is about the only good defense for beers.

    Guess that`s a good thing. ;-)

Ah, in this case, bears typically attack campers for their beer. (btw, there is no plural for beer with proper English, but don`t tell a pissed of bear that!)

The Park Rangers are advising hikers to be alert for bears and take extra precautions to avoid an encounter.

They advise visitors to wear little bells on their clothes so they make noise when hiking. The bell noise allows bears to hear them coming from a distance and not be startled by a hiker accidentally sneaking up on them. This might cause a bear to charge.

Visitors should also carry a pepper spray can just in case a bear is encountered. Spraying the pepper into the air will irritate the bear's sensitive nose and it will run away.

It is also a good idea to keep an eye out for fresh bear scat so you have an idea if bears are in the area. People should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat.

[IMG] Black bear scat are smaller and often contain berries, leaves, and possibly bits of fur.
[IMG] Grizzly bear scat tend to contain small bells and smell of pepper.
